Five-year-old girl sold for sex by her own mom and murdered over $200 debt

A mother traded her five-year-old daughter for sex to pay off a $200 debt and the child was later murdered in a twisted tragedy.

Shaniya Davis was reported missing from her home in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on November 10, 2009.

The prime suspect was initially her mother’s boyfriend, who she accused of abducting her child.

He was taken into questioning but later released after police got hold of damning CCTV footage.

The grim footage was made public six days later and shows another man carrying little Shaniya through a hotel corridor at least 40 miles from her hometown.

He was later identified as Mario Andrette McNeill, who turned himself in on November 13.

Police said he admitted to taking the girl and he was charged with kidnapping.

Meanwhile, Antoinette Nicole Davis, Shaniya’s mother, was claiming to be clueless about what had happened to her daughter.

But when she was later caught red-handed on security footage near the hotel, she was forced to change the story.

After falsely accusing her boyfriend, the mother later admitted that she had traded her daughter to pay off a $200 debt with McNeill.

Arrest documents stated that she “knowingly provide[d] Shaniya Davis with the intent that she be held in sexual servitude” and that she “permit[ted] an act of prostitution.”

She reportedly handed over her daughter to McNeill under the premise that he would take her to a hotel room to “have sex with her”.

Davis told investigators: “I gave her to him to cover $200. He was only supposed to have sex.”

Initial reports alleged that Davis owed McNeill money for drugs.  But Cumberland County District Attorney Billy West later said that McNeill gave her $200 to buy food and pay for a hotel room after she and her kids fell into homelessness.

Davis reportedly did not have the funds to pay McNeill back but the suspect said he would accept either money or sex. She willingly handed over her daughter to settle the score.

She told investigators that she had tried to stop McNeill from taking Shaniya but investigators were not convinced.

Shaniya’s mother was charged with human trafficking for allegedly selling her child as a sex slave on November 14, 2009. She was pregnant when she was arrested and her child was later taken into foster care.

Davis would ultimately be sentenced to at least 17 years in prison and be registered as a sex offender for at least 30 years.

Her five-year-old’s body was discovered off a rural road in North Carolina after five long weeks of searching.

An autopsy revealed that she had been suffocated and had injuries “consistent with a sexual assault” breifly before she died,  a medical examiner said.

Assistant District Attorney Rita Cox said the child died “a slow, agonizing death” with a “carcass wasteland for her burial site”.

McNeill was issued a death sentence on May 2013 after being convicted of murder, kidnapping, human trafficking.

Other convictions included sexual servitude, taking indecent liberties with a minor, and sex offense of a child by an adult offender.
